Niagara 5 Module Signing and Java 25: What Changes for Third-Party Modules
Page date October 30, 2026. Sources read October 30, 2026. This is a dated snapshot; we refresh it weekly.
Short answer: Tridium says Niagara 5 modules must be signed: "WILL N5 MODULES REQUIRE A SIGNATURE TO BE LOADED INTO A N5 STATION? Yes." Niagara 5 also "moves from Java 8 to Java 25", so "developers should expect migration work". For third-party modules, Tridium says to "identify any third-party modules in the station and confirm that Niagara 5-compatible versions are available". Source: N5 FAQ (PDF dated June 24, 2026). Niagara 5 GA is a December 2026 target and is not announced as of October 30, 2026.
What has to be signed
The N5 FAQ says: "Niagara 5 introduces module signing requirements as part of a stronger software integrity and security posture." The Niagara timeline (undated) lists "Mandatory software module and program code signing designed to help enhance security". So the timeline covers program code too, not only modules.
Signing already exists in Niagara 4
N5 doesn't introduce signing. It makes it mandatory. The Niagara timeline lists signing features in Niagara 4:
| Version | Timeline entry |
|---|---|
| 4.0 | "Module code signing" |
| 4.8 | "Third party module signing" |
| 4.9 | "Module signing" |
| 4.10 | "Bulk Certificate Signing Tool" |
| 4.13, 4.14 | "Certificate Signing Service" |
Still to verify: we read these version numbers from the timeline page layout. Check them on the live page.
Java 8 to Java 25
"Because Niagara 5 moves from Java 8 to Java 25 and includes platform changes, developers should expect migration work and should validate compatibility early." (N5 FAQ (PDF dated June 24, 2026)). The Tridium N5 page says "Built on Java 25". The Niagara timeline says "Modernized platform foundation built on Java 25".
Tridium also says: "Custom modules should be reviewed and tested for Niagara 5 readiness" and "Review custom modules, integrations, and program objects for Niagara 5 readiness." (N5 FAQ)
Third-party modules: what to ask each vendor
Does an N5-compatible version exist, and is it signed? Tridium says those dependencies "may affect migration success" (N5 FAQ).
Timeline
"N5 is currently in Early Access for active Niagara Developer Partners to support Java 25 and code migration readiness." (N5 FAQ (PDF dated June 24, 2026)). GA is "targeted ... December 2026" in the same FAQ; the Tridium N5 page says "Coming in 2026". See Niagara 5 release date and Should you move to Niagara 5 now? Keep 4.15 patched meanwhile: Am I patched? and the CVE list.
